Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the United States. She has worked as an editor since the year 1995. Feminist Frequency is a website that hosts videos and commentaries analysing portrayals gender roles in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and American feminist media critic. She is the creator and director of executive for Feminist Frequency which is an education not-for-profit site that examines the representation of women within popular stories of culture. Aiming to break down the stereotypes associated with women in popular culture, she seeks to bring attention to targeted exploitation of women and other marginalized classes of individuals in the internet world. Sarkeesian, who has a Master's in the field of Social and Political thought in the field of social and political thought from York University, is a popular public speaking. She has given speeches at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and the United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. At a young age Sarkeesian was captivated with gender issues and feminist thinking. When she was still in school, in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to create an online series on the role of gender in games but was the target of a harassment campaign online. But the assault did have been a hindrance, rather it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist critic of media. Numerous awards have been given to her as a way of acknowledging all of the contribution she has contributed to. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for many years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency. The educational non-profit explores the role of women within the popular culture stories.
